Preface

In God's great kingdom there are many parts of the Body of Christ placed for service and ministry to this dying, depraved world.  It is so important that we, who are integral parts of God's plan for the salvation of mankind, function according to His true will and purpose.

The following considerations are offered to you, the reader, from scripturally based truths and experiences, thus related by this servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are sons of God and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus, but to be true vessels of the Holy Spirit today we must submit ourselves to God's way of ministry and allow our minds to be renewed; not conformed to the world, but transformed, thus proving His perfect and acceptable will. (See Romans 12:2) Hallelujah!

Introduction

Whether you feel your place of service to be in a local body (church) or to be in some distant country or nation, the same basic principles of ministry apply.

I know, as you progress in these writings, that the Holy Spirit will quicken to your heart and mind these wonderfully simple principles that enable us as Christians to supernaturally accomplish the commission of Jesus, our Lord.

If you have been walking very long as a saint of God, you have already found out that your source of strength, wisdom, power, and most importantly, love, comes from your Father above.  Amen!  Jesus himself said that He did nothing of His own initiative or will, but that of His Father in Heaven. (John 6:38)  "For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me."

These writings, I believe, will challenge you to examine your calling to see if you are being motivated by the Holy Spirit, as is witnessed by the Word of God.  Today there are many Christians who are attempting to serve the Lord by fitting themselves into slots and positions created by man-made or religious systems.  This results in many frustrated men and women, who desire with all their hearts to be a part of Jesus' ministry on the earth.

Let me give you an example.  Contrary to popular belief and usage, the word "missionary" is not found in the Bible.  Why then, has this word and title been so widely used to label God's chosen vessels for service to the earth's peoples and nations?  It is because of our unrenewed minds concerning ministry callings.

Whereas the word "missionary" is not found in God's word, there are words that are found that denote Christian action. In Acts 12:25, the word "mission" is mentioned in reference to a journey of Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark to Jerusalem.  The original greek word here for mission is ministry.  The word ministry is interchanged regularly in the original greek text with the word service.  This word most commonly denotes a willingness to serve beyond that of duty and bondage to a master.  To serve Jesus carries with it a light burden and an easy yolk. Glory to God! (Matt.11:28-30) "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my load is light."

The subjects discussed in these writings will be based on the New Testament.  I believe that Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today and forever, (See Heb. 13:8), is Head of the Church and our best example of ministry.  His example gives to us a scriptural basis to evaluate our ministry opportunities, and to be more effective tools of our Lord.

There are many so called "limitations" placed on God's people today by those who have appointed themselves as experts in various fields of ministry.  Certainly we can learn from those who have preceded us in the faith, as long as they have lived and operated by faith and not by sight.  The best examples are still revealed to us from God's word.  Paul stated in I Cor. 11:1, "Be imitators of me just as I also am of Christ."  In I Thess. 1:6, "You also became imitators of us and of the Lord."  In Heb. 13:7, "Remember those who led you, who spoke the Word of God to you, and consider the outcome of their way of life, imitate their faith."  In Eph. 5:1,  Paul speaks of the highest form of imitation, "Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love just as Christ loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma."  You see, brethren, we have the examples and patterns clearly set before us in His word.  Let us press on to the high calling in Jesus' Name.  Hallelujah!

The Call

To be in the service or ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, we must first be called and chosen of God.  Jesus said in John 15:16-17, "You did not choose me, I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in my Name, He may give to you.  This I command you, love one another."  If you have been called, there is an inward witness of the Holy Spirit and it is "Irrevocable".   (Rom. 11:29) "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."  In the parable Jesus told in Matt. 22, we must see three principles of being chosen for service in the Kingdom.  "For many are called and few are chosen" (Matt. 22:14).  First, we must hear the call; second, we must be willing to come; and third, we must not go our own way, but follow Him.  Man's religious systems have entered into the church today and given Christians alternate paths to follow that lead to "limited" effectiveness in ministry.

Always remember that your own talents and qualifications that appear to be so useful to God are not necessarily what God needs.  Paul states this in two places in the New Testament.  Please read Gal. 1:10-18.  The points made are, first, we cannot seek the favors of men, but only God.  Second, the ministry is not according to man, but through the revelation of Jesus Christ.  Third, previous knowledge, abilities, and zeal are not applicable to that of our present calling, and last, that it requires a time for us to receive these revelations according to John 14:26, which states, "But the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."  We must decide to receive our guidance in truths from the Holy Spirit. (John 16:13), "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth."   In Phil. 3:3-4 & 7-8, Paul says that "We are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh.  If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more; ... but whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, For whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ."  We must not put confidence in our flesh but in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Count your own abilities as rubbish in order to gain Christ Jesus, brethren.  Amen!

Don't think that when you decide to truly follow Jesus, (Become His disciple) that you will be automatically accepted and recognized by the man-made "church" and its systems.  Let your determination be to allow God to bring to pass your direction and development.  He has promised us this in I Thess. 5:24, "Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass."   Don't be misled to believe that education and training are more important than becoming intimately acquainted with the Lord Jesus.  Let your confidence be like unto that of John and Peter in Acts 4:13, "Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were marveling, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus."   Praise God!

As you have probably noticed, I have not yet addressed the subject of "foreign fields of service" more commonly known as "foreign missions".  This is not because I don't recognize that part of Jesus' commission which states, "going to the uttermost parts of the world."  Even as I write these words, by His grace, I am in a foreign country serving the Lord Jesus.  It is because of past and present observations that I have made that I am  inspired to exhort you who are preparing for the ministry, to  remember that wherever you find yourself - Jerusalem (hometown or community), Judea (home region or state), Samaria (other regions), or the uttermost parts (foreign lands), you are always in preparation for future service and ministry.  Be faithful with what "plow" you have your hands to.  For you to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ, it requires a life of self-denial, wherever you are located geographically.  Let God build that firm foundation in your life so that the works you are able to do will be to His Glory!

Jesus constantly had to deal with prideful attitudes among those of His own company and choosing.  "If you want to be great in God's kingdom, you will be a servant of all."  "The greatest will be a servant of all". (Matt.20:26 and Mark 10:43).  This principle is later confirmed through Peter in I Peter 5:5-6, "You younger men, likewise be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time."  This passage shows us that this principle Jesus spoke to this disciple, Peter, was received, and became a part of Peter's life and ministry.  Recognizing the place that God has called us to is not by any means prideful, but necessary; however, we do not boast and brag of this divine appointment to others in the Body of Christ.  The more responsibility we are given by God in this earth, the more of His grace and humility we will have to appropriate.

We could spend much more time on the discussion of ministry gifts and offices of callings, but I feel it is more important  to see how these apply to everyday service, rather than try to discuss each one separately.  We are all saints of the Most High God; therefore, we need to grow and be edified.  Eph.4:11-16. "And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the Body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.  As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love."   Do we believe that in God's divine wisdom, that we will find everywhere all parts of the Body of Christ functioning, or at least attempting to function?  We need to consider this in our relationship with others, and in the evaluation of our present ministry opportunities.  Hallelujah!  It's time for God's people to quit seeing through glasses darkly in the areas of ministry gifts and callings.  For instance, if Jesus saw fit to give to the church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, then they are needed today everywhere in the Kingdom of God.  If Jesus has given to the church, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretations of tongues, then they are needed today! (See I Cor. 12:4-11)  If we disagree with these statements then we should have a scriptural basis for this disagreement, and not just our opinions or traditions that can make the Gospel of no effect in us.  We have a responsibility if we are going to follow Jesus, to follow him in every way.  II Peter 3:18 states, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."  One of the main reasons God does not receive the glory He is due us because there are those of us who are supposed to represent Him on this earth, but who are not willing to exercise faith to the point of "Nothing is impossible."  Jesus said in John 14:12, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also ..."  Do you think we can do these works with or through our intelligence, education, talents, abilities, church affiliation, mission society, or any other natural means?  I will be quick to inform you that the answer is NO.  Only through His grace by faith can these wonderful works of "going about doing good and healing all who are oppressed by the devil"  be wrought.  Amen!  It is not to say that if we are being sent out into the harvest fields of the world through a true part of the Body of Christ, be it a local church, mission base, or similar means, that these cannot be instruments of God, but it is important to have our faith and trust fixed on Jesus, the Head of the Church, "In whom we live and move and have our being" (See Acts 17:28).  We can never allow our vision to be narrowed by our particular calling, or group, or geographical location.  Remember!  We are a part of a grand, living organism called the Body of Christ.  "We are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the Head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fit and held together by that which every joint supplies according to the proper working of each individual part causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love." (See Eph 4:15-16).

Let me leave you with this thought, brethren.  What we need manifested in our lives is God's love.  This will not only enable us to have personal victory in our life of faith, but will allow us to demonstrate His will to others.  I am more convinced each day that I live in Jesus that His Love never fails!  Thank you Jesus!  Please read for your edification I Cor. 13.  God so loved the world that He gave His Son, Jesus, to whosoever believes.  Hallelujah!  Where ever we find ourselves today, we should consider it a privilege to be God's fellow-workers, God's field (cultivated land) and God's building (warehouse). (See I Cor. 3:9). Amen!  (For further insight and study on these thoughts refer to the book "God's Divine Organism, the Church".)

The Opposition

I feel it extremely important to lay these considerations before you next, because as assuredly as you are called and chosen for service by God, most assuredly will you be opposed by forces of evil, destruction, confusion, discouragement, distractions, and apparent failures.  We have the power to overcome all of the opposition directed toward us in the Name of Jesus, for "He that is within us is greater than he that is in the world" (I John 4:4).  "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world -  our faith.  And who is the one who overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (I John 5:4-5).  Hallelujah!

When Jesus spoke to us in John 16:33, He said, "These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace.  In the world you have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world."  Jesus was speaking from first-hand experience, because He was opposed in the wilderness by the devil immediately after His baptism (See Matt. 4:1-11).  Unless we realize that most all of our opposition originates from satan and his devices, regardless of who or what he uses, we will meet with much despair in the ministry.  As satan continued to oppose Jesus throughout His earthly ministry, he will also oppose us.  What we want to see and have a better understanding of is how and by what means does he accomplish this opposition.  Let me say to you now that I want you to be open to the Holy Spirit.  Don't take offense at these considerations, but evaluate them with God's word, for I am only your brother and take the attitude as being the least of you all.  I hope to convey these truths to you based on II Tim. 2:24-26, "And the Lord's bondservant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition; if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will."

(A) Religion

As we progress in our awareness of satan's devices, it will be necessary for him to seek new areas of approach to our sometimes unknown weaknesses of flesh and mind.  He will even resort to coming as an angel of light.  That is why "religion" and religious traditions and practices are such subtle avenues for his use against Christians,  I do not wish to criticize your group or association that you may find allegiance with at this moment.  You alone must evaluate these relationships, and determine whether they are helping or hindering your service to the Lord Jesus Christ.  There is a constant struggle between "religious forces" and true Jesus ministry.  Beginning with our Lord's ministry, here on the earth in the flesh, continuing on through the apostles' ministry and even up until today, this opposition is evident.  No more than Peter or others from the church at Jerusalem could impose traditions on the gentile believers or withhold God's blessing on any people, can we do so today.  Please read Acts Chapters 10, 11, and 15.  There are times in the Body of Christ that we have to be reproved for "religious attitudes" that make the Gospel of no effect.  Please read also Gal 2:12-21.  Hypocrisy has caused more people to stumble than any other instrument of satan.  Don't be guilty or be a victim of religious self-righteousness and false piety imposed on you by any person or group.

Jesus said to the religious pharisees who were trying to examine His ministry, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, this is the great and foremost commandment, and the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.." (Matt. 22:37-39).  There are many manifestations of love to our neighbors, but religious spirits don't lend themselves to any of these manifestations.  We must surrender to the Father and His will here on earth.  Look at what religious spirits opposed in the ministry of Jesus as depicted in the Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and the Epistles!  They opposed salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, divine healing, deliverance from demons, prophecy, teaching God's word, tongues, ministering to the widow, orphans, hungry, naked, poor, prisoners, and outreach to so called unacceptable people such as prostitutes, tax collectors, etc.  Please read Matt. 25:35-46, also Mark 16:15-20. Here we find the great commission.  Does the present direction of our service (ministry) include these instructions of Jesus?  This is the simple, yet world-wide commission of our Lord Jesus Christ.  I propose that many Christians today, even so-called "missionaries," are not involved in any of these.  God have mercy!  Make up your mind to oppose religious systems and attitudes that would prejudice the "whole message of this life", (See Acts 5:20), in Jesus to anyone, anywhere, even if it means (and it will) persecution, revilings, and false accusations for His Name's sake.  We are blessed of God if we follow His plan.  In your heart, how do you think the down-trodden, despondent wretches of this world (rich and poor) look upon the modern day "monuments" to men and their "ministries"?  What a shameful appropriation of God's resources and poor stewardship, have been wrought in the Body of Christ.  II Tim. 3:5 says we should avoid a "A form of godliness that denies the power of God."  (For further study and consideration read the book "Religion the False Hope".)

(B) The World

Oh! How the world and its systems pull on God's servants today.  Jesus was speaking with His usual wisdom when He spoke in Matt. 13:22 of the word being stolen from God's people through "Worries of the world and deceitfulness of riches."  This also affects our fruit bearing.  He said to the man in Mark 10:17-22, who had kept the law from his youth, "One thing you lack; go sell all you possess, and give to the poor and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.  But at these words his face fell, and he went away grieved, for he was one who owned much property."  If we've never had many worldly possessions, we cannot say what we would have done in this case.  Is Jesus asking us to forsake even worldly possessions?  Yes!  Do you believe Jesus would ask you to leave houses and farms?  Yes! (Matt. 19:29) "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sister or father or mother or children or farms for my name's sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life."  "Set your mind on the things above and not on the things that are on earth" (Col. 3:2).  Is it possible to be deceived about riches, while in the ministry?  Yes!  See what the word says in I Tim. 6:7-11, "For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.  And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.  But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.  For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some, by longing for it, have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many a pang.  But flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, and perseverance and gentleness."

Is the Lord opposed to riches? No!  Not as long as we use them to His glory.  See verses 17-19 of the same chapter, I Tim.6, "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.  Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed."  God knows the motives of our hearts and He will not share us with the world.  James 4:3-5 states, "You ask and do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.  You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?  Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend to the world makes himself the enemy of God.  Or do you think the scripture speaks to no purpose?  He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us."  Are material possessions the only thing the world uses against us?  No!  But see I John 2:15-16, "Do not love the world, nor the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world."

Oh!  Brothers and sisters take heed to this form of opposition, for if it was not a danger to your faith, then God would not have addressed it so consistently in His word.  We cannot serve God and mammon.  For we will love the one and hate the other.  But we love God. Amen!

(C) People

I must share with you that God does not want you to hate or despise or dislike any human being, but He does want you to love Him more than anyone.  We all have loved ones, and they may include mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, and friends of long standing.  Unless you commit yourselves to loving the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, these other relationships with people will be used as opposition to the service and ministry of Jesus.  Many people reject these thoughts initially because they seem so unlike the sweet, loving gentle, nature of God.  Jesus promises us that "If we give up brothers, sisters, children, parents, wives for the Gospel we shall receive many times as much at this time and in the life to come, eternal life." (Please read Matt. 19:29, Mark 10:29 &30, Luke 19:30).  A very interesting statement is made in Mark 10:30, "With persecutions."  How did Jesus react when he was informed that his mother and brothers were outside looking for Him (See Mark 3:31-35)?  Did He stop preaching and serving His Father to go out and see them?  No.  He simply said in verse 35, "These are the ones who are my mother and brothers.  For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother." Is God confused?  Did He not say honor our mother and father?  Yes! but He did not say obey them over His will.  Did He not say love our wives as Christ loved the church? Yes!  And we should not desert or forsake, or leave our wives, but we must obey God and seek His kingdom and righteousness first.  Listen dearly beloved saints; it takes faith to please God.  Nothing is impossible if we can only believe.  We must give troubling and opposing relationships over to God and determine ourselves to serve God regardless.  Remember I Cor. 13.  Love never fails!

But brother, I feel it's my responsibility to raise my children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  I do too.  What greater way is there to do this than for us and our households to serve God.  Hallelujah!

I have seen many sincere brothers and sisters shrink back from ministry because they allowed family, friends, and yes, even brethren to pull them away from going all the way for God.  Let me ask you some questions.  What attitude did Jesus have as His disciples decided to turn away from Him because of His sayings according to His Father's will (see John 6:65-68)?  He did not chase after the remaining disciples and beg them to accept Him, but waited for the Holy Spirit to speak through Peter, "Lord to whom shall we go, You have the words of eternal life." (vs.68)  He (Jesus) exercised faith and confidence in the Father.  What was His attitude when Peter denied him?  Did He not forgive him and pray for him?  What about his attitude in the Garden of Gethsemene?  Was He not obedient to His Father's will in spite of the lack of support from Peter and John in prayer?  And last but not least, what was His attitude as He hung from the cross?  Did He not finish the supreme sacrifice and ask His Father to forgive them, as they knew not what they did?  What about His attitude after the resurrection, after finding His disciples returned to their professions?  Did He not help them catch such a large catch that it broke their nets?  After that He pointed them back to faith towards God and left them tarrying in Jerusalem for the power of the Holy Ghost that would enable them to be His witnesses.  You may say, "I know Jesus was faithful, but that was Jesus."  Is He not our example in ministry?  I believe He is.  He said follow Me, did He not?

Let's look at some of His followers in the early church.  Has the church changed?  Who changed it?  Has it been possibly changed by man?  Yes, it has.  Paul was opposed by fellow apostles, fellow servants, Jews, gentiles, false brethren, countrymen, kings, and rulers. (Please read I Cor. 11:26, Acts 15:39-40, Gal. 1:6-14).  Paul makes no reference to his natural family, according to the word, but only refers to his spiritual family in God.  He does, however, direct us specifically in regard to the issues to be expected in our family relationships.  Please read I Cor. 7, Eph. 5:22-33, 6:1-4, Col. 3:18-21.  He also addresses our right as men of God to take along with us believing wives, "Even as the rest of the apostles, and brothers of the Lord, and Cephas (Peter)" (see I Cor. 9:5).

We receive tremendous encouragement from the word of the Lord spoken in II Tim. 4:7-8.  Paul said, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing."  In verses 10-15 Paul depicts the various ones who have opposed him, deserted him, remained with him, and he finished his statement of faith by saying (verses 16-18) "At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me, may it not be counted against them.  But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, in order that through me the proclamation might be fully accomplished ... The Lord will deliver me from every evil deed and will bring me safely to His Heavenly Kingdom; to Him be glory forever and ever.  Amen!"

Where does this leave us in our relationship with other people?  It leaves us depending upon the Spirit of God within us to manifest with all the fruit of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control (see Gal. 5:22-23).  Hallelujah!

Never forget! "We struggle not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore, take up the full armor of God that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything to stand firm" (Eph. 6:12-13).

Rest assured, dear brother and sister, that "Our weapons of warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses" (II Cor. 10:4).  Other translations say "For the pulling down of strongholds."  Let me summarize with this thought.  Jesus! is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; not just a way, a truth, and a life, but He is the only path for us to follow!  Glory to Jesus!

How should we react to those individuals that are in our life, whether they be natural family, brethren, friends, or strangers, that seem to be hindering forces against ministry and service?  In Rom. 12:14-18, 21 we are given God's way of dealing with those who we are associated with.  "Bless those who persecute you, bless and curse not.  Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.  Be of the same mind toward one another, do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly.  Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.  Respect what is right in the sight of all men.  If possible, so far as it depends on you , be at peace with all men.  Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good."  How totally contrary these divinely wise instructions are from our natural human reaction.  We all need to grow in His grace in the area of being a doer of the Word in our dealings with those around us.  Amen!

The People, The Places and The Seasons

There have been and are today many servants of God spread throughout the face of the earth.  I would offer you this thought.  People are people everywhere.  Jesus died once for all sins and once for all mankind.  Each country, nation race, and tribe does not have a different Jesus.  He is the same Lord to all who would receive Him.  Hallelujah!

As I have been meditating on the opportunities that the Lord has given to me to share the good news, the Holy Spirit has brought back to my remembrance many different people and needs that existed in their lives.  Paul said in I Cor. 3:6-11, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.  So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.  Now he who plants and he who waters are one, but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.  For we are God's fellow workers, you are God's field, God's building.  According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise masterbuilder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it; but let each man be careful how he builds upon it.  For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."  What a beautiful truth, that allows us the freedom of service and ministry anywhere, anytime, with anyone.  Glory to God!  We are not responsible for the results, we have no control over the results, that is God's department.  Our responsibility is to go forth and preach, saying "The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." (See Matt. 10:7).

I have had the privilege of sharing the Gospel truth with many different backgrounds of North Americans, Latin Americans, Jews, Arabs, Orientals, Black Natives, British, French, Indians of several different origins, poor people and rich people, highly educated and illiterate people, business executives and common laborers, students at all levels, teachers, professors, principals, and deans, politicians and government authorities, lawyers and doctors, athletes and coaches, airplane pilots and truck drivers, plumbers, welders, mechanics and carpenters, auctioneers, farmers and cowboys, professional musicians, theologians and religious leaders of all types (some false and some true), prostitutes and homosexuals, criminals and mental cases (inside and outside of institutions), husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, and widows and orphans.  Do you know what I have found true, through these opportunities?  They all need God's love.  The language they all understand is the language of love, His love, Jesus' love.  I have witnessed miracle after miracle in the lives of people as they heard of that "Someone" who cared for them and loved them, Jesus Christ our Lord.  Hallelujah!

I went into this lengthy description for a special reason.  I want you to know that God, the creator of the universe and all mankind can, if we will let Him, use us anywhere, anytime, with anyone, if we are willing to communicate His love.  Amen!

Jesus spoke these words to us, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations ..., teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, and lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:18-20).  "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation" (Mark 16:15).  "And that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His Name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem" (Luke 24:47).  With these words of our Lord, we are given the authority and right to go forth.  Saints, do you think Jesus would have instructed us to do these things in His Name and would not have made a way?  One point that must be considered by all of us, as God's servants and ministers, is once having the authority and right, do we need anything else?  Yes.  We need the power from on High.  Jesus instructed His disciples in Luke 24:49, "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on High."  Where does this power come from brother?  From on High.   In Acts 1:4,5,8,9, "And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, which He said, 'you  heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now ... but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses ...' and after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on..."  How important is this power?  It was the last subject Jesus discussed with His disciples before His ascension.  He had walked, taught, and trained His disciples for three and one half years and this was His final instruction to them.  Do you have this power, brother or sister?  How can I have this power?  Ask and you shall receive.  Please read Luke 11:9-13, "If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"  Don't let tradition or religion prevent you from having what you need to minister for Jesus. Without this power from on High, you will be in store for many frustrations and failures as you attempt to fulfill the commission of our Lord.

Entirely too much emphasis is placed on studying cultures and languages of peoples and nations.  That same time and energy could be devoted towards gaining Christ and getting divinely equipped for service.  What will it profit you to learn of cultures and traditions, when God is sending you there to give them an opportunity for an entirely new way of life, that of casting down traditions and cultural practices that make the Gospel of no effect.  If you disagree, stop now from reading these thoughts and read the book of Acts.  Study it in its entirety.  See how the ministers in the New Testament church dealt with people's traditions and cultures.  That's what the Gospel is for, to change people.  Glory, Hallelujah!

How many of you believe that the Holy Spirit will teach you all things (See John 14:26)?  Exercise your faith.  "All things" include language or any other means of communication you will need to express God's love.  I have never been in a position of needing to tell someone about Jesus Christ, that the Lord did not provide a way.  Many times it was not the way I expected, but it was provided nevertheless.  God's ways are higher than ours, Amen!

There is much unnecessary discussion about the shocking adjustment we must go through in other cultural environments in which we are not accustomed to.  That is why Jesus says to us, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life finds it." (Matt. 16:24-25).  Paul stated to us in Phil. 4:1-13, "Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  I know how to get along with humble means and I also know how to live in prosperity.  In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.  I can do all things through Him who strengthens me!"  Although this passage refers to material provision, it also refers to "any and every circumstance" and "doing all things through Him"  is strongly emphasized.  Again it requires faith to please him; faith in God that removes mountains and casts them into the sea (Heb. 11:6, Mark 11:22-23). "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him."  "And Jesus answered saying to them, «Have faith in God.  Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it shall be granted him.»"

Many times we see  maximum effort put forth to try to establish ministry by constructing buildings and physical plants.  This is permissible, but not necessarily profitable.  I have been many places where the needs of the people far exceeded the need for buildings and mission bases.  In the New Testament we never see mention of "church buildings" and the like, only the building of the "church" of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is the people.

According to the Word of God let's see where and how the church met.  We see in Acts 2:44-47, "All those who had believed were together ,and had all things in common, and they began selling their property and possessions, and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.  And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people.  And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved."  In Acts 5:12, 42, we see "And at the hand of the apostles, many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's portico.  But none of the rest dared associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.  And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number; to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets, and laid them on cots and pallets so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.  And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ."  In Acts 8:25, "And so, when they had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were preaching the Gospel to many villages of Samaritans."  In Acts 16:25, "But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them."  In Acts 10:24,27, "And on the following day he entered Caesarea.  Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends.  And as he talked with him, he entered, and found many people assembled ".  In  Acts 20:20, "... How I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house."  And also in Acts 28:30-31, "And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters, and was welcoming all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered."

Many times for a lack of understanding of the proper functioning of the Body of Christ in the area of seasons of time frustration in this area surfaces.  I have observed, for example, Christian workers in a field of ministry where they were being bound in time, by an organization that dictated according to man's time frame, very frustrated.  Only the Holy Spirit can be in the final position of leading God's servants from place to place and people to people. Never have the misconception that you are critically indispensable to a certain field of ministry.  I have observed brethren who would not move out of the way, so God could use someone else.  Their season was up.  On the other hand, I have observed people leaving prematurely because their flesh didn't like the conditions or circumstances.  I have observed frustrated brothers and sisters who had a term of service established by man's system.  For example, a "mission field" assignment for two years.  After one year, their role may be accomplished, but they are forced to stay there for the duration without a heartfelt commitment to the work.  This type of situation not only results in negative fruit, but also could harden the workers for future service.

Let's look at seasons of ministry in the book of Acts.  In Chapter Eight, Philip was enjoying a fruitful ministry in Samaria.  The Holy Spirit spoke to him about one man, the Ethiopian eunuch, who was traveling on a desert road to Gaza.  Because Philip was obedient and willing to go where God needed him, this man was saved.  After that, Philip was translated in the Spirit to other areas to preach.  How long was his season with the eunuch?  Maybe one or two hours, maybe half a day.  Glory to God.  In Chapter Nine of Acts, Peter was in Lydda for the work of the Gospel.  Nearby in Joppa there was a need for the ministry of Jesus to be manifested.  Peter responded to the need, and much glory was brought to the Lord through his obedience.  He stayed in Joppa after this for many days instead of returning to Lydda.  He was enjoying successful ministry everywhere he went in Jesus' Name.  Chapter Ten and Eleven of Acts depicts the Spirit's leading of Peter to Caesarea to the household of Cornelius, a gentile.  Peter did not want to go initially, but after going in faith and obedience, his vision was greatly expanded, and he was convinced that God was no respecter of persons.  Who are we to stand in God's way?  In this same Chapter Eleven, Barnabas was sent to Antioch from the church at Jerusalem.  He went and sought Paul from Tarsus, where he had been for years preparing for ministry.  Paul and Barnabas then spent one year with the church in Antioch and taught considerable numbers.  It was here that the disciples were first called "Christians."  As we observe the ministry of Paul throughout the Book of Acts, we can see that the Lord moved him from place to place for different seasons and reasons, sometimes for months, sometimes for years.  Paul always had one simple purpose.  That purpose was to preach and teach God's word.  Look in the last chapter of Acts and see what type of ministry the faithful Apostle Paul was involved in.  This was the last known account we have from the Bible of Paul's service to the Lord.  Acts 28:30-31, "And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters, and was welcoming all who came to him, preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered."  What a rewarding climax to this bondservant's years of ministry in which the Holy Spirit had allowed him to go about as He (The Spirit of God) willed over all the known world, telling of Jesus.  Sometimes the Holy Spirit even disallows us to go where we would desire to go.  (Acts 16:6-7) "And they passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; and when they had come to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;"  God had a different strategy for this place Asia.  Acts 19:9-10, "But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.  And this took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

The Support

Much anxiety and energy is put forth, I am sorry to say, in the area of seeking financial support by ministers and servants of the Lord.  Why is this?  I will tell you in one simple statement.  It is a lack of faith in God!  As I have previously stated, don't reject this type of statement until you have considered the Word of God concerning this matter.

If we are, in fact, involved in seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then what do we have promised to us?  Starvation, rags, desertion, a life of need?  God forbid!  And He does forbid because Jesus has promised never to leave us nor forsake us nor desert us.  (Heb. 13:5-6) "Let your way of life be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, «I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you;» so that we confidently say, the Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.  What shall man do to me?"  Let me emphasize this Biblical truth by quoting now out of the Amplified Bible, Hebrews 13:5(b), "I will not in any way fail you, nor give you up, nor leave you without support.  I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake you nor let you down (relax My hold on you).  Assuredly not!"  Glory to God!  What a fortified, power-packed statement and promise we have from the One who calls us, chooses us, sends us, and supports us, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.  HALLELUJAH!

Jesus tells us in Matt. 6:34. "Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own."  This was His closing statement after having spent verses 25-33, in detail, assuring us of His faithfulness.  You may say in response, I don't think God would ask me to exercise my faith to this degree."  You are mistaken and deceived.  Jesus said to His disciples in Matt. 10:9-10, "Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts or bags for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support."  When we are being sent by God to a field, or for a season of ministry whose support do we want?  God's or man's?  Don't think just because there seems to be some manmade system of raising support that it pleases God for us to utilize it.  Nothing pleases God but faith.  "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1).  Another version of this scripture states, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen."  So then we know faith is a spiritual force that has substance  and evidence.  In years past, before I had some spiritual understanding of these principles of faith in my heart, I found myself serving on "budget committees" and "foreign mission boards."  What a pitiful excuse of faith towards God.  Men were coming together to allocate and plan how they should provide for God's own.  It didn't work then, and it won't work now.  Don't be deceived by all the promises of men, churches, mission boards, and other organizations.  Put your trust in the Lord.  Read Jer. 17:5-8, "Thus says the Lord, Cursed is the man who trust in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord.  For he will be like the bush in the desert and will not see when prosperity comes, but will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, in a land of salt without habitation.  Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is the Lord.  For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes.  But its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit."

If we spend our time and energy on the natural techniques and abilities of men to gain support for the ministry we feel we are called to; sooner or later those resources will be exhausted.  Why should we not give that time and energy to the spreading of the Gospel, and not be preoccupied with "support" for "our project."  I would rather depend on God as my source than man.

Let me say right away, that this by no means eliminates God using the body of Christ to help support us.  It is scriptural that we receive support from our brothers and sisters.  Let's look to the Word of God concerning these points.  In II Cor. Chapters 8-11, Paul addresses the support received and attitudes that we should have concerning this support.  II Cor. 8:1-4, "Now brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality.  For I testify that according to their ability, and beyond their ability they gave of their own accord, begging us with much entreaty for the favor of participation in the support of the saints."  What a blessing to know that there were and are today Christians who are not only willing, but begging, for opportunities to give to the support of the saints.  God speaks to His people in the area of giving.  Some listen and obey, others do not.  That is the reason you can never put your trust in mankind.  I have had many people speak to me, totally unprompted, about their desire to support the ministry in which I was involved.  Time then reveals as to whether they have been sincere or not.  It is good to receive words of encouragement from your brethren, but if you trust only in their words, you will be disappointed at times.  Trust in God.  I have had many people give offerings to the ministry in which I was a part.  People that I never expected, even heathen have helped. (Prov. 13:33), "And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous."  God honors the attitude of the heart.  See II Cor. 8:12-13, "For if the readiness is present, it is acceptable according to what a man has, not according to what he does not have.  For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction; but by way of equality ..."  We who are in the ministry are not just to receive offerings only, but also be looking for ways to help others.  See II Cor. 8:13-15, "At this present time your abundance being a supply for their want, that their abundance also may become a supply for your want that there may be equality; as it is written, He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little had no lack."  Glory to God!  Do you think God wants us to share?  Yes.  For this reason the Holy Spirit will speak to people on your behalf and speak to you on other people's behalf.

It is so important that we allow God to work out our support.  Why?  One reason is because God blesses cheerful, prompt givers.  See II Cor. 9:6-7, "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully (with blessings) shall also reap bountifully (with blessing); Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves as cheerful giver."  It is necessary for you to have the principle of giving in your heart.  I hope you are in a body or fellowship that can help you to grow in this area.  We cannot expect to receive to any measure until we have learned to give and share accordingly.  That is why many "ministers" are spending most of their time today soliciting for and then trying to protect their income.  This is not God's way.  Give yourself and all of your resources to Him and the needs of others.  You will never be disappointed or ashamed.  Hallelujah!

Isn't it amazing that God was able to supply the needs of His saints in the early days of the church without mailing lists, television, radio, lending institutions, computers, and other arms of the flesh incorporated by many Christians today.  II Cor. 9:10-12 says, "Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which though us is producing thanksgiving to God.  For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgiving to God."  Today there are many "ministers" who fleece and drain the Body of Christ of the resources that God intends to be used to help meet the needs of others and to be given to the poor.  Some of these people need to be trusting God for their support and the support of others instead of using the Gospel as a means of gain.I Tim. 6:3-5(AMP) "But if any one teaches otherwise and does not assent to the sound and wholesome messages of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and the teaching which is in agreement with godliness - piety toward God - He is puffed up with pride and stupefied with conceit, (although he is) woefully ignorant.  He has a morbid fondness for controversy and disputes and strife about words which result in (producing) envy and jealousy, quarrels and dissension, abuse and insults and slander, and base suspicions, and protracted wrangling and wearing discussion and perpetual friction among men who are corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, who imagine that godliness or righteousness is a source of profit - a money-making business, a means of livelihood.  From such withdraw."  In II Cor. 11:8-9, Paul states, "I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to serve you and when I was present with you and was in need, I was not a burden to anyone; for when the brethren came from Macedonia; they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from being a burden to you, and will continue to do so."  I can assure you brothers and sisters, if we continue in the service of the Lord, we will be sent places to minister where we will not receive offerings from those people.  Are we willing to work with our own hands to supply our need and the needs of others also?  See I Thess. 1:9, "For you recall brethren, our labor and hardship, how working day and night, so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the Gospel of God."

The Gospel is free, without charge.  Can we say that we have the right to compel someone to pay us for sharing God's word and giving of service?  Paul had a notable ministry, wouldn't you say?  Did he take advantage of those to whom he was sent, or by whom he was sent?  No!  Look in I Cor. 9:11-18.  Read it closely, meditate on these Holy Spirit inspired words.  "If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we should reap material things from you?  If others share the right over you, do we not more?  Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the Gospel of Christ.  Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share with the altar?  So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the Gospel to get their living from the Gospel.  But I have used none of these things that it may be done so in my case, for it would be better for me to die than  to have any man make my boast an empty one.  For if I preach the Gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion; for woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel.  For if I do this voluntarily then I have a reward, but if against my will. I have a stewardship entrusted to me.  What then is my reward?  That where I preach the Gospel, I may offer the Gospel without charge so as not to make full use of my right in the Gospel."  I praise God for His provision.  Let us permit our minds to be renewed.  If we need some food, we need to be open to having God speak to someone to provide our food.  We don't have to always have a pocket full of money.  If we need clothes God will provide clothes.  If we need shelter, God will provide shelter.  We may not get the deed and title to a dwelling, but we will have use of it.  If we need transportation, God will provide transportation for us.  It may not be a brand new car or truck that we get ownership of, but if we have use of it, it will meet the need of the moment.  What about tomorrow's needs, brother?  "Now the God of Peace who brought up from the dead, the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you with every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.  Amen! (Heb. 13:30-21).

Don't be limited in your concept of God flowing through you or to you.  We may have all our needs figured out to the last penny.  That is such a small issue with God, since He has promised to meet our needs as we are being faithful.  We should expect and desire God to use us as vessels of blessing, over and above our own personal needs.  God wants to bless us so we can bless others.  Hallelujah!  With God;s help and grace our attitude can be changed from being concerned with our own needs to that of being concerned for the needs of others.  That is how a real servant and minister of God is.  Amen!

Conclusion

Down through the years, I have guarded my mind against heresies, by limiting my reading of books written by men.  I have felt it was my main responsibility to read, study, and meditate in the Word of God.  In recent years I have been greatly inspired by the writings of sincere brethren to search the scriptures even more closely.  I do not consider myself an author.  For this reason I have humbly submitted to you these "considerations."  Glean from them only what bears witness with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God that richly dwells in you.  Remember, "All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (II Tim. 3:16-17).
